Ston is the easternmost town on Pelješac, a peninsula located just 35km north of Dubrovnik. Until recently, travellers heading to Ston from the north of Croatia would have had to pass through a 9km stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s coast (and two border crossings) in order to reach the country’s southern regions, however, thanks to the construction of the much-anticipated Pelješac bridge that opened to the relief and delight of Croats in 2022, the peninsula now acts as a viable link between these two previously-separated halves of the nation.
Mali Ston is accessible by car or bus from the city of Dubrovnik. To get to Mali Ston from Dubrovnik, take the D8 highway north towards Trpanj. At the intersection with the D414, turn left and follow signs for Mali Ston. The drive takes about an hour and a half.

Hugging the hillside for 4 miles between the two villages, this is the longest defensive wall in Europe and the second longest in the world after the Great Wall of China. Construction began in 1333, when Pelješac was ruled by the Republic of Ragusa, and continued for almost four centuries, as the builders had to adapt to the rough terrain and advancements in warfare technology. By the time the walls were completed, they would span 7 kilometres and include three fortresses, 41 towers, 7 bastions and a system of moats, all designed to repel invading forces and protect the salt pans that provided the town with its wealth.
